PoE si distingue in particolare per un vastissimo skill tree in comune a tutte le classi e una gestione delle abilità che permette una completa personalizzazione dello stile di gioco, dando la possibilità di sperimentare qualsiasi build ibrida vi venga in mente.
Il gold è inesistente, e la currency è formata da oggetti di utility come orbs che alterano le stat degli items o indentify scrolls.
